All Smiles…

As a born-and-bred eastender, i’m a little embarassed to admit that up until a week-or-so ago, i’d never even heard of the Clown’s Funeral Service, let alone covered it!

1

On an unassuming little street round the back of Dalston stands Holy Trinity Church, the clown’s church.

2

On the first Sunday in Feburary, it’s taken over by painted faces & oversized shoes for the Clown’s Funeral Service in rememberance of those entertainers that have passed away over the previous year & of a certain Mr. Joseph Grimaldi, the grandfather of modern clowning.

As the hall fills with well wishers, many of which are parents with young children, the attending clowns gather in a back room for a rousing chorus & private moment’s prayer.

It’s an amazing sight with this sea of fun & colour streaking through the usually solemn church hall.

THE CLOWNS CHURCH SERVICE

On a whole, it’s a pretty lighthearted affair, although I did capture a couple of really poignant moments of reflection.

Once all the clowns have filtered through the crowd, they occupy the front few pews for the main service.

Then once the service comes to an end, the fun starts again as the clowns, jesters & harlequins in attendance turn it on & entertain the little ones.

It’s a really lovely sight- i’ll definately go back next year with my own little ones in tow.
