Brown & PINK!
It’s 7:30am on a wet, miserable Saturday morning & i’m standing in a boggy field in Winchester…
Normally, i’d be a very unhappy bunny, but today, i’m beaming from ear to ear. I’m here for a very good reason; i’m covering one of Cancer Research UK‘s many “Race For Life” events taking place nationwide. I’ve covered a few over the past month or so, but this one was that little bit special, for this was the ‘Pretty Muddy‘ 5k race!
A “Pretty Muddy” fun run is EXACTLY what it sounds like.
It’s a 5k obstacle course with LOTS of brown stuff. The race starts with a gentle warm-up at the start line just as the heavens open…
My Journo, Vicki-Marie; a proper athlete who eats 5k runs for breakfast looks a little unsure as the rain comes pelting down…
But once the race gets underway, the usual high-spirited fun i’ve witnessed at previous events returns as a sea of pink passes in front of my lens.
We reach the first obstacle & the (chaotic) fun really begins…
It doesn’t take long before the ladies’ pristine pink outwear is stained & sodden.
There are plenty of gents around the course cheering on their better halves, all toasty in raincoats & brollies, but none look even half as jovial as the competitors.
The course runs around the edge of the main field before snaking through a number of pitches at the back of the park before heading towards the start line again.
And anyone that wasn’t too grubby yet were in for a treat as they’d saved the best ’till last. The penultimate obstacle was a giant mudpool competitors had to crawl through on their hands & knees.
Most of the competitors trod carefully through this particular obstacle, much to the enjoyment of the two guys stationed there with snowshovels full of mud.
It was by far the best spot for pictures.
There were some great reactions captured.
And lashings of lovely mud!
There was one particular competitor that absolutely went for it! (much to the amusement of her pals)
I’d clocked her onsie wearing group at the warm-up & kept an eye on them throughout. She didn’t disappoint. I had a look for her at the end, but couldn’t find her. I’m gonna name her Miss Splash!
Miss Splash, I salute you!!!
There was one final obstacle remaining; the inflatable mountain. A short, knackering climb up one end.
And a messy, mucky slide down the other.
A fantastic event that I am very much looking forward to covering again next year…
ENJOY!
