Radio Ravers
LYNCHPIX
I’ve always had a real passion for music. Once upon a time I was actually a DJ myself. Although music is still a huge part of my life (And I still spend waaay too much on vinyl!), I decided to follow my other passion instead- photography.
–
A couple of weeks back, I got to see the life I might’ve lived when I was invited to shadow one of the country’s top DJ’s Annie Mac over a typically hectic weekend…
We started out on Friday night at the BBC’s Regent Street studios where she hosts her weekly Radio show.
We took a back seat trying not to draw her eye & allow her to do what she does best.
–
We shot mostly from an adjoining vacant studio & from out in the corridor through the glass dividers. She was very much in the zone & looked like she was having a ball…
She even dropped me & my boy’s favourite record right now.

I stayed for the first hour, then left her to it just as her special guest; Drum & Bass royalty Andy C stepped into the studio.
The following evening we headed to Camden & Club KoKo for her “Annie Mac Presents” clubnight. I headed to stage door & picked up my passes for the night, then it was up to the green room to wait for my slot.
Although I’d arrived just before 9pm, a full hour before doors open, the venue was already a buzz of excitement & the green room was packed with artists & guests.
A short time later, my journalist Amy arrived & we were brought up to Annie’s dressing room for a pre-gig interview.
A hugely intelligent woman, she was also very “matter of fact” & grounded about her success. You wouldn’t have begrudged her a bit of arrogance; you are looking at one of the most successful female DJ’s on the planet right now!
Interview wrapped, we headed back down to the green room where we met up with the rest of our team. We were on a promise of a quick portrait session before her headlining set at the stroke of midnight. We got ourselves comfortable & reached for a drink.
Then out of nowhere, she comes racing past us & onto the adjoining stage. There had been a mix-up with one of the DJ’s & she was having to fill the time herself.
This kind of thing is not uncommon. Most top DJ’s take on a half-dozen gigs per Saturday night & it doesn’t take much to run behind & arrive late to a set. Annie, the true professional didn’t even hesitate. She just jumped on stage & did what she does best to fill the timeslot.
–
My own personal concern was that I hadn’t got my portraiture time.
Her assistant promised me that we’d get it once she had finished her set, but I thought that highly unlikely after three to four solid hours’ graft under the heat of the stage lights.
So I had to make the most of it & shoot her on-stage.
–
Her set was spot-on & the crowd were jumping.
–
–
With my shots in the bag, I left my journo Amy dancing away in the VIP area stage right.
And Annie cutting some shapes on-stage.
I slipped back behind the huge black curtain out to stage door & headed home.
ENJOY!
