Sevens

From East to West I travelled from my native Docklands in the eastend to the serene green pastures of Twickenham to cover a training session with England’s Sevens squad ahead of the World Series Tournament coming up. It’s not the first time i’ve undertaken a shoot at Twickenham, but never before have I been gifted such access.

We began the session in the dressing rooms for an introduction & team talks.

Before heading into their private gymnasium next door.

Then they headed out onto the hallowed turf for a warm-up.

The warm ups looked like great fun, although i’m not sure about the parachute training!

One of the main things I noticed with these guys as apposed to your regular 15-man Union squad is that they’re all much more trim. That’s not to say that the Union guys are fat, but as there are only seven players covering the same pitch space as the Union team, they have to be much faster on their feet. There’s no room in the Sevens game for the big men we’d be used to seeing in the scrums- these guys would have rings run around them!

Warmed-up, the guys split into teams & had a knockabout. They were lightning fast around that pitch…

They certainly looked ready to me- I wish them all the luck in the world for the upcoming tournament- GO ENGLAND!
