LYNCHPIX
A couple of Sundays back, I had a shoot right out of left field- literally in a field!
I headed to a school in Dorking, Surrey for the UK Wife Carrying Championships!!!
This was the sixth time this barmy event has taken place, an import from Finland & to be fair, it looked like a great giggle. As I arrived, they were still setting up the course- a fairly short 250 yard dash up & back down a nearby hill whilst overcoming a handful of obstacles.
–
Firstly there’s the mound of hay to climb, then the ‘water trap’ where locals douse you with buckets of freezing cold H2o (more on that later).
–
There was a great turnout for the event, both at the start line & in the crowds- especially considering it was bloody freezing! There was snow underfoot as Winter had clung on this year. We’re used to being bathed in hazy spring sunshine in March…
–
Then the race kicked off & 23x sets of nutters, excuse me couples trundled their way towards me.
As you can see, there were lots of different techniques attempted for the race with most people adopting the ‘Estonian Hold’ as seen above by our man Mr. 33.
The first obstacle was the haystacks, before that water trap I mentioned!
–
And like a flash the race was over!
Every participant recieved a medal & small keg of the local brew for their efforts, which I thought was a really nice touch.
The 1st place couple, Mr. 33 again (Matt Witcock & Lindsey Finn) recieved a little bit more than that- A lovely set of tankards & the wife’s weight in beer!
Now there’s a prize worth getting excited about!
ENJOY!
