MDF = Art…
LYNCHPIX
This time last week, I had a shout from the Metro with an Arts shoot in Bermondsey, south London. A not too unfamilliar job booking for me, although details were a little sketchy on what the story was. I had the place, the time & the subject; David Rosenberg of the Shunt Collective, but absolutely no idea what the angle was.
I arrived nice & early at the enormous warehouse complex that is “The Biscuit Factory” & was pleased I did arrive so promptly as it was a major pain in the posterior working out which warehouse was which!
I eventually found the right annex & stepped into a hive of activity. I’d walked onto a huge ‘live arts’ install & our angle for the story became very clear…

The warehouse had been split into two zones; one dressed like a classic ballroom & the other, a maze of MDF doorways & corridors. Both were still heavilly under construction with elements of the install in varying stages of completion, so I wasn’t sure where the artist would be happy with us shooting, although I was secretly leaning towards the symmetry of the corridors & exposed brickwork.
Our man was pretty laidback all things considered, although he too was leaning more towards the MDF corridors as they were in a more advanced stage of completion. The doorways were tailor made for portraiture with LED strips of lighting embedded into the framework.
We started clean-and-tidy with a selection of glossy magazine style portraiture using the doors as framing devices for our man.
We got a great selection of shots, both candid & more engaging with eyes-to-camera.

Before packing away the lighting rig & having a play around with those amazing LED installs.
The paper ran a great spread using the studio-lit shots. They were absolutely perfect for the piece, but for me, there was something about the ambient shots that grabbed my attention more making this weeks’ “Image Of The Week”…
